You might want to try connecting the external drive to the SE. If it works, make sure you backup anything on the external you want to keep. Then reformat the external and install new system software on it still using the SE. Once that's done, you should be able to connect the external to the Plus and boot it up.
I am having a hard time trying to open the Plus
Don't forget about the screw under the battery compartment.
