Several years ago, I pulled my 1956 convertible from Waco to Arkansas without
incident. The next year, a friend pulled my Mexibeetle home from Nogales,
New Mexico. I have never had a real problem. However, I recall a couple of
years ago, a donated beetle belonging to a central Ark. hospice that was being
raffled, was being pulled all over the place behind a motor home. The beetle
turned over, causing major mischief and injury.

My thinking:
1. A trailer has all the advantages, except initial cost.
2. Definitely, the front wheels must be free to turn. And just placing in
neutral is fine, unless there are already-existing drivetrain problems.
3. In traffic, and around gas stations, try to avoid tight turns, esp. a
hard turn one way followed by a hard turn the other way. This may cause the
front wheels to "lock" in one extreme position. Still manageable; you just
have
to get out and re-center the steering.
4. Good luck! YMMV.
