I towed my daughter's '74 standard Beetle from El Paso TX to Yorktown
VA (quite a haul!) with my '94 Isuzu Trooper without incident using a
standard VW-specific tow bar. I checked the tranny fluid, ensured
the steering wheel was not locked (not an issue for you), ensured the
tires were inflated properly and had an extra spare and small floor
jack before I left. No backing up and no sharp turns were the ROE
for this trip. BTW the spare came in handy somewhere in NC.

The use of magnetic tail lights attached to the top of the Bug
(available from U-Haul) and a "car-in-tow" sign in the back window
gave me a better feeling of security.

Good luck.
