I cleaned and resealed my car's tank *several* years ago with a POR-15
product and the sealant hasn't peeled or disintegrated yet. The makers of
POR-15 make a kit specifically designed for this purpose, or you can buy
everything you need separately. Once you start using POR-15 products,
you'll likely want to continue using them. Because of this, I advise
purchasing everything you need separately and buying a larger container of
the etching agent -- Metal Ready (it actually comes in handy for prepping
other projects as well). The instructions are available online.

The "kit" will work for one tank up to 25 US gallons in size, and since our
tanks are closer to 10 or 11, the kit will do two complete tanks. I know
this because I carefully measured off exactly half of the 1 quart container
prior to doing my own tank and I still had enough to properly slosh around
inside the tank and end up with an excess amount during drainage. I ended
up selling the other half-quart to another listee very shortly afterwards
(the stuff *does* have a shelf life once opened).

Subject: [vintagvw] cleaning and/or sealing a gas tank?

Hello all,

Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad)
with cleaning and/or sealing a gas tank? I don't
think the tank needs any repairs. My only
experience was having a radiator shop perform
this on my Truck (20 gallon tank) and it costing
over $100.00. I understand there's cleaner/sealer
sold for home use but would like to hear of
experiences with this.

Thanks,
Brian
