Guys,

Ok, I put this one off for a long time, but since we all seem to be coming
back alive, here goes.

Last spring, I rebuilt my 1776 daily driver in a new dual relief case.
One that I got from Zundfolge a long time ago...one without the plungers
or springs.

So, I buy a new set of aftermarket plunger/springs and install them...you
know the ones...ones solid and one grooved plunger. Installed the grooved
plunger in the rear spot and the solid one in the front.(It had been a
long time since I took apart a real dual relief case).

This is also a turbo engine(AJ's kit) and I had been running it before in
a single relief case with no problems.

Now all the sudden I had situations where it was getting too hot. BUT!
only at interstate speeds over about 70. Around town, it was fine...oh,
and it has a type 3 oil cooler in it(6 pass? instead of five pass?).

So, I did a lot of testing...as I *wanted* the deck lid closed*

With a solid decklid/with a vert decklid
With standoffs(solid lid)
Vert lid with exta holes under the license plate.
Various scoops on the vert lid...both pointing down and up.

Temp sensors in the exhaust air from the oil cooler showed that I could
never get more than 159 degree exhaust air off of the oil cooler...even
when oil temps were hitting 240.

And that's the thing....the would go up to 240(in the original
configuration)...and stop there. Finally, with all configurations tested,
I was down to about 220 after being on the intersate for as long as I
wanted to run....as soon as I got off the interstate, go further than 3
miles(at 45-50 or so) and I was down to 200 or so(ambient at 95 degrees
plus).

Oh, and one other...I can't get the head temps over 325 degrees even when
it is 95 out side on the interstate.

So, now it is cold, but I can't get the oil temps over 185 in
town...couple of weeks ago when it got to be 70, I ran tests and could get
about 200 since I changed the rear plunger to the proper solid one.

So here is the current config.
Dog house tin with flaps and thermostat.
Vert closed decklid with 2 2" holes under the license plate.
No scoops.
Proper solid plungers in front and back.
Engine tin trimmed and in place(around the turbo headers)
Up and down pipe wrapped and turbo has a turbo blanket on it.
Megasquirt EFI...31lb injectors/ 45mm throttle body(vanagon)
1776 engle 100 cam 40x37.5 single spring heads

So, how much difference can I expect with the proper front and rear
plunger(both solid) when it starts getting warm again. I am looking for
comments on the oil cooler/plunger setup...or other hints for things I may
not have thought about trying.

BTW, it runs really, really well!...when the clutch was new, I got
4th gear rubber(205/70x14) at 65...there is no turbo lag to speak of and
at 70 mph on level ground I run about 8-10 lbs of vacuum...on a steep long
interstate hill, I am hovering at about 0-2psi of vacuum.

Cheers, dave
