You've probably checked this out already, but is there not a piece of 
fibreboard, plywood, thick polyethylene plastic, or the like on the seat 
springs directly above the battery?  Shorting of the battery terminals by seat 
springs was a chronic problem on older beetles, especially when there was any 
load on the rear seat bench.  The best fix was to put a sturdy insulating 
shield on the underside of the springs.

Just a thought.
