Hello volks,

I am in the process of rescuing yet another vinatge VW from the evil
clutches of local scrappers. This time a 64 Split bus! This would however be
sent over to another city for a resto and mild mods.

The bus comes with a Diesel slapped in its behind which has to go. I have
eyed a Dual port 1600 which came off a Bay window bus at the scrap yard. Its
series is AF and its M240 option badged. From what I understand it came with
dished pistons and was designed to run on low grade gasoline due to the lower
compression ratio.

What are your comments on an AF series engine?? any pros and cons?? Worthy
buy or should I wait for something better?

The new owner plans to totally rebuild the engine and use it as a weekend
ride. Now when he replaces the sleeve/piston set he would lose the dished
setup. Would that not result in a 'non-M-240' setup?? Or does the M-240 have
more differences??

Please shed some light on this. In an ideal world which 1600 dual port
series is the best buy in terms of performance?

Thanks for all thoughts,

Asad
