That's a good question, and having never seen an AF
engine in person I'm not able to answer it with
certainty. But the DIN horsepower rating is only 1 HP
less than the AE, so I doubt that there's anything
significantly different besides the compression
ratio...could be the distributor advance curve or carb
jetting was tweaked a little too.
Let's not confuse the VW "M" code with the I/M 240
emissions test gaining use in the US, so far as I know
the similarity is strictly coincidence.
Seems to me that an AF core could be expected to be in
slightly better shape than an AE with the same history
due to the lower C.R - potentially it could be a
decent foundation, if not quite as desirable as a
later case with factory 8mm head studs.
