Scott,

What I have used is brass rod that fits over the cable end and then 
soldered it.

The brass rod is available at Lowe's and Hobby lobby as well i think.

It makes a really nice finish to the cable and helps keep the solder where 
it is supposed to go.

Use a cutoff wheel of some sort(dremel or larger) to cut the cable...this 
will keep it from trying to unravel as you cut it.
