Volks,
Thanks for the replies to my previous alternator conversion question.
Had planned for the swap this weekend but something came up. My previously
100% reliable 68 daily driver has started to give trouble!
Last week I ran out of gas after noticing I was getting bad gas mileage.
Well, Pushed my luck and ran out just a few meters shy of the gas station.
Filled her up and she ran well.
Now this week, I am driving along a main road when I notice intermittent
power loss. First I think its my imagination or lack of sleep. But then I enter
an underground pass and the bugs really sputtering. Dies before the exit ramp.
I start it after some attempts and just about make it up and park at the side
of the road. I suspect crap in the carb so try to clean it a bit with carb
cleaner and all. Starts up after some efforts and Im off again. Sputters a bit
then dies again along another main road. Comes back to life after a bit and
then dies again. I make it to a roadside shop adn proceed to dismantle the carb
adn clean it up. I find no crap inside the float bowl though. A good cleanup
later its back in the car. Runs good.
I proceed home but then again along a main road the bug dies. Now I suspect
the spark. I pull out the dizzy and replace the condensor with a brand new one.
Good I had one in the car. Did not replace the point to save time. Just sanded
it a bit to clean up a small visible pit. Reset the timing with a static light,
this time a bit more advanced as it was retarted a bit earlier. Start her up
and she runs beautifully. The sound had changed! I was a happy man!
But today, while on the way back from work, the performance is repeated!
Aaarghh!
Now what could be possibly wrong with the car????
I am thinking of a chocked fuel filter. I run it in front of the engine ie
where the gearbox is. Maybe it is not delievering enough fuel at high speeds???
Almost always the trouble was on long straight roads where one is in speed.
Need to take a look at it.
  What else could be wrong????
Bad coil (runnign a nice Bosch from Brazil)?? but would it not be continous
rather than intermittent??
Bad slow jet??? Running an electric one in the Brazilian carb. Could this
behave this way????
   Any other ideas???
TIA for all your thoughts.
