There really is no hard rule for when to replace a fuel filter. It
depends on where you live, fuel condition, weather condition, etc.

If you live in a place with lots of dust in the air or a place where
the fuel you get may be dirty right from the pump then you should
probably at least back-flush the inline type filter once every few
months and replace it once a year. If they are readily available and
not too expensive just forget the back-flush and replace it once every 6
months.

If the place you live is less dusty then replacing once a year is
probably good.

As a general rule, if you have to crawl under there to get a good look
at it, you may as well replace it while you're down there. They cost
about USD $2 each over here. I just bought a 1970 Campmobile and I have
no idea what kind of crud is in the fuel tank so I bought 5 of the
filters and tossed them in the glove box.
