     Thanks for your thoughts.
     I think a blockage somewhere in the fuel line is the top possibility as 
you say. But how can I explain the poor gas mileage I have been getting 
lately???? Can a blockage at any point explain that?? Just tryin to wrack my 
brains on that......
    I shone a torch under the bug to see the filter near the trans after dark. 
It *seemed* clean, though Id be sure when I jack up the car, pull the left rear 
wheel adn get a good closeup look and maybe dismantle the line to check the 
flow. I plan to do that tomorrow hopefully, have been tied up with work.
    The filter is well clear of the trans or other hot areas and so far over 
all these years I have never had any trouble. But my running the tank dry may 
have triggered a chocked filter/line.
