Did you check the filter sock inside the fuel tank(assuming it is still 
there)?  If you were running lean for awhile, you will end up with your foot 
deeper into the throttle to get the car to go, causing worse fuel mileage.

Garrett,
      That could be another possibility.
      Id keep it as a second option however because I noticed today that the 
bug 
indeed misbehaves only when I push the gas pedal too much, such as on a 
straight 
road/ramp etc. At slow speeds it runs fine.
