List, I was off on Friday (receiving the mails on a company account) and quite surprised to find the sudden uplift in traffic. Reading through some of the mails sent on Friday made me want to contribute my own :) so here is a little story from a currently VW-less Dutchie:
I joined this list before I even owned a VW. I can not remember who pointed me towards it but it must have been around the time I got "infected" with the VW-virus. Must have been around 1999. The list was rather high-volume at that time and so I quickly pick up a lot about VWs and automotive tech in general. Most things were new to me, having a job in software support at that time. It was not until my wife and I went out to get our own VW that I realized most of my knowledge was from reading e-mails by NQ, Bill May and all those others. Rob Kuhn comes to mind too, he sent some great stories talking a lot about the "rice burner" fans in his area until he left the list since he got himself a Honda :). When talking about the VW I wanted to buy with the shop owner that had it on sale I discovered that I knew what a dizzy was but had no idea of the part's name in my own language, so I ended up pointing at the part! I bought a nice European 1967 bug and had a great time with it. By that time I got to know Pim van Loon, another Dutch guy, who was very active in the Dutch online and show community. With him I helped getting on-line exposure for VW-Euro, one of the greatest VW shows in the area in those days. That show attracted people from the Netherlands (were it was held), Belgium, Germany, the UK and even Finland. By that time Assad asked quite a lot of questions, working on his own VW with limited means, and at one point I sent off a CD with technical information to him which was much appreciated. Unfortunatly, when my son was born in 2001 I found it harder to spend the time needed to maintain the VW. In 2006 I had to admit that keeping the VW was not going to be good for the car since I no longer managed to work on it. As a result I sold the VW to a young man who seemed very eager to work on it and drive the VW. It is still on the road today which feels good since that is what they were meant for. For a while I received no more messages from the list, thinking I had unsubscribed, but suddenly the posts began to re-appear in my inbox. Since I still enjoy reading them (and quietly hope to drive a VW again when I can find the time to care for it) I decided to stay on (mostly as a lurker).
