Hello Pete. Glad we're seeing the list a bit more active again. I never lot my love for the VWs and even though I almost sold mine, I'm glad I didn't. Li'l Red is still on the road and lately, I've had to really rely on the little car as the Ford Contour I got out of the impound yard failed me. One of Ford's greatest lemons and I have one! It was cheap from the impound yard though and done me well over 25,000 miles but since I really don't like the car, it makes the perfect sacrificial lamb for me. I can drive it in the winter salt and my dubs are kept high and dry. Li'l Red is due for some head maintenance and I have a seized plug on #3 so I'm going to put on a rebuilt set of heads and while it's out, rebuild the carburetor, replace the intake manifold with one that isn't plugged, and just do some regular maintenance. I've converted to disc brakes and love 'em though they squeal a bit and the rear has super stopper shoes from aircooled.net Now I have good brakes all the time with little worry about adjustment.
As time goes on and I'm learning that my stubborn internal convictions about modern machinery are justified, I'm finding that I really like my VWs more and more. I enjoy working on them and keeping them as a forever car. No vehicle has ever given me such trouble-free miles as my VWs. All the hocus pocus about how they break down, start fires, etc. are all born out of idiots who don't understand mechanics. I've been all over the USA with my Beetle and it's been the best car I've ever owned and it's very cheap to maintain and replace parts on. I plan on driving my VWs as long as I can keep up the maintenance on them. When I get where I can't, I'll probably hang on to them for a while. I don't want to live long enough to see them sold but would love kicking the bucket knowing someone was going to get them and take care of them. I've found a few more red Super Beetles for sale in the area and am thinking of getting them for parts or spare Li'l Red's to drive around. I'd really love to do a modest restoration that includes tons of rust proofing so I could drive one around in the winter with little worry. This would have to involve undercoating and powdercoating but once I did that, I should be able to control the rust for a long time. It's either that or move to some place where they don't salt the roads. Thanks for taking time to write. I'm going to try to do some VW work this fall and winter and hope to post to the list about it so we can get things fired up again.
