Can't remember if you already inspected the other valves; while the head is off and the new valve in hand it might be an idea to pop the keepers off the remaining valves and compare the valve grooves with the new one. Excessive wear would tell you if the other valves are of cheap material and may also fail. Did the tranny fail catastrophically? You mentioned you were able to get off the road in 2nd, but I'm wondering if a 4th gear failure and sudden deceleration would overstress the valve train. Keep us posted! They don't see the need for a machinist since the valve guide is in good shape. The above link is my blog post with a picture of the valve stem.
