OK. Then it sounds to me like cheap valves or mis-fitting valve keepers (re Bill May's post) were used in the rebuild. I expect, unfortunately that you'll find the same wear on the other head. <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]&q=from:%22bi ll+may%22> bill may <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]&q=date:20130 417> Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:44:30 -0700 Did or does the two keepers touch at both splits when keepers installed on valve? If keepers touch at both sides then this can cause this. Sometimes is good to remove a slight amount of metal to ensure it does not happen. Looking at inside of keeper at grooves you can see sides of keeper going 90 degrees to ribs that fit in grooves at valve stem. Those sides must not touch as it means keepers are loose on grooves of valve stem and not getting full engagement. I don't know how to explain it any other way. No, it wasn't a sudden stoppage. The engine continued to run but no power to the wheels. had to down shift to get it off the roadway. I'd talk to the engine rebuilder with evidence in hand and see what resolution you might come to. Was the tranny fail a sudden stoppage event? That stress could be another explanation. I'd concur with listees on having heads quoted/done by a reliable shop. Compare with your cost of individual valves. Both have some wear in the grooves. They aren't as bad as the failed valve but neither will fit through their guides and there is a small amount of metal, circular 'shavings', more like the edges of the valve end were sheared off. The area between the grooves is tapered nearly to a point (a circular ridge around the valve) and not a flat surface as it should be. So, I'd say Strictly Foreign did not use very good valves. Not saying its their fault. I don't know where they sourced their parts. I will get a set of valves (both intake and exhaust, 40mm and 35.5mm from a reliable source. like chirco) Man those things aren't cheep. So. Is it true that I can replace valves by lapping them in and don't need any additional work. I can lap but that's the limit of my valve skills.
I put a pic of one on my blog as well as a pic of a new valve with a keeper.
