Yes, face time does require wi fi because it would really chew up a
lot of data charges on 3G. And yes, it defaults to the front facing
camera, but it's really easy to switch. It's also easy just to turn
the phone around sometimes because the nice thing about Face time is
that you don't have to be close to the speaker at all for talking purposes.

From the description, it sounds like you have control even when
using that app, to somehow switch to the back camera. I haven't use
FT yet. Unfortunately, my husband has an Android phone. But I have a
good friend who is sighted who has an IPhone, so I could actually
take advantage of her assistance on occasion.
