Hi David, as has already been stated, this is not a reboot, it is a
crash. The springboard (which is analogous to the explorer.exe process
in Windows) crashes when you do this, meaning that it automatically
reloads--but it's not a full system reboot. If the explorer.exe
process crashes on your PC, it will reload without your having to
reboot the PC first. It is like that.

It is not as though every few seconds the iPhone starts updating a
system file or updating part of the firmware. The iPhone is pretty
locked down in that respect. I'm not trying to sound skeptical or
disbelieving, but has your friend actually seen this happen or is it
just his theory? If there is one platform that is pretty locked down
and safe from non hardware-related system crashes, it's the iPhone.
Unless you jailbreak, or cut the power while updating the
firmware--something along those lines, you should be fine from a
software point of view. Even if you do one of those things, you should
be able simply to restore in iTunes.

All this is not to say that we should take our iPhones for granted;
absolutely not. But I did just want to give some perspective on this.
