This is fascinating.

I think not all Earpods are created equal or I’m completely crazy. Neither of
which would I doubt right now.

I have an app called Handy Rec. It has the ability to monitor what the
microphone hears so you can hear it in your earphones.

My Earpods that came with my iPhone have the button that is about an inch and a
quarter or perhaps a tiny bit less in length.

One side is completely smooth.

The other side, has a section about one half inch long that is inset which is
the main button, but also the microphone surface. How do I know that? Because
with handy Rec running if I touch any part of the inset section, I hear the
sound of my finger touching the microphone.

If I touch anywhere on the opposite side, the smooth side, I do not hear that.

If I touch the volume up or volume down buttons that are at the end of the
inset section/microphone, I do not hear anything through the earphones.

There is no detectable notch on these.

My conclusion is that the inset section in its Entirety, is the microphone.
That is also what you have to press in to activate Siri.

So, I took a pair of needle nose plyers, which are very thin, and very gently
squeezed the button and held it until I heard the tones indicating Siri is
listening. I ask Siri a question and Siri said “I didn’t get that.” A
variation on that statement is all I can get out of Siri when using the Earpods.

So, like I say, either I’m crazy, or these Earpods are different than the ones
some of you are using.

Or, they are defective.

Thanks for trying to help.

Richard

I would try this. It's going to be a little hard to explain, but you might want
to try squeezing the entire housing of the remote between thumb and pointer or
middle finger, but place whatever finger on the back of the remote, where the
mic is housed, a little further down on the housing. You might also try using
your fingernail to find the mic. It'll feel like a little knick on the side of
the housing opposite the buttons. Place your finger that will be on that side
of the housing when activating Siri beneath that knick, and you should be fine.
Personally, I've not had problems with Siri when using wireed headset mics.
Where I run into trouble with Siri is when I'm using my LG HBS 700 bluetooth
headset. I don't think that's Siri's fault, though.

I was using the button on the earpiece as the article that Gary posted said
worked so well so you wouldn’t have to take your phone out of your pocket to
interact with Siri.

I guess maybe that really isn’t the case unless you have really tiny fingers
that don’t block the microphone or something.

Very odd.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Are you using the home button to activate Siri rather than the clicker? I tried
using the clicker at one time, but I think that when I did that, my hand
blocked the mic, so Siri didn't work well. Once I started using the Home button
to activate Siri, I stopped having trouble being understood by Siri.

Best,

Anna

Has anyone gotten Siri to work with the Apple Earpods or another headset with

It never understands me whether I use the Apple Earpods or my Bose Mobile
headset.
