Richard, 

I got my magnifier out to look closely at my apple earpods that came with my 
iPhone 6. I could find no openings that I thought should be there to serve as a 
microphone yet the smooth side opposite the remote and volume buttons does have 
a picture of a microphone on it so there's one there. I'm just not sure where. 

I think I agree with Craig that your issue might be related to iOS 9. I have no 
problem summoning Siri when holding down the earpod remote button as you 
described. I am running iOS 8.3.
