I had the same problem of Siri not responding to my words when using the 
earpods until I realized that my holding of the control area of the earpods was 
blocking the microphone. The way I got around this was to press the control to 
summon Siri to listen, then, when I heard the Ding sound, take my hand away 
from the controls and then talk.
