The phone goes inside the defender case and the relatively thick plastic screen cover is part of the case, it is not put onto the glass with an adhesive like other, thinner screen protectors. There may not be actual air pockets, but by nature it can never be as tight a fit and there will be a very small amount of give. I just don't like screen protectors and couldn't care less if I touch my phone with wet or dirty hands, if the screen is dirty I just wipe it clean again. After all, it's just a piece of glass and you still have to wipe the case/screen protector as well if it gets dirty. Also, if you have a 6S or 6S Plus, these phones are highly water resistant even though Apple doesn't draw a lot of attention to that. But when iFixIt did their iPhone 6S and 6S Plus tear down, they discovered seals around the touch screen and all buttons and ports. There are also Youtube videos and reports where people put their iPhone 6S in a bowl of water for half an hour and the phone was working fine afterwards. Would I do that, heck no, but it's good to know that a few splashes of water or using your phone in the rain won't be an issue. It is my guess that Apple will officially announce a standard of water resistancy with the iPhone 7. I think a lot of people think the iPhone is way more fragile than it really is.

The reason I want the screen protector is because I often touch my phone with dirty hands.
