What version of iTunes are you running? that's the only reason I can imagine you wouldn't be told you'd be getting 9.3.2 after the restore. I doubt Apple would actually start installing a version of IOS that isn't even available any more and end up bricking your phone. If it were me, I'd take the chance, but I definitely don't blame anyone for being more cautious messing with a device that might be very critical in your daily life.

I dunno, the only time I put the ipod into DFU mode then clicked
restore it offered me 9.1. I didn't go through with it because I know
Apple isn't signing that firmware, so I don't want my ipod to become
completely unusable.

Another interesting thing i forgot to mention yesterday.
I put my ipod into DFU mode just to see what it looked like, hit
restore, and it offered to restore to Ios9.1, I believe it was.
I didn't do it, of course, because as far as i know apple isn't
signing that version anymore, so I think restoring to it would brick
my ipod worse than it already is.
Why would a DFU mode restore offer a firmware Apple isn't signing?

Alan,
Yeah, it is super weird that one device works while the other doesn't.
Also, yay, someone else who thinks the way I do about xp. It suits my
needs, I'll upgrade when my desktop dies.
All I use itunes for is putting music on my devices, so because one of
my devices works I can see no real reason to upgrade. If neither
device synced that'd be different.
Thanks for the good luck, I hope I can get this working, ugh.

Cheryl,

I agree with you one hundred percent and I still use my Windows XP box
to
run older programs that I had no interest in acquiring versions
compatible
with Windows 7. I've always believed that you should run the operating
system that you know and that runs the programs you need to get your
work
done. Windows XP still does an awful lot of that for me.

That's great that your iPhone running iOS 9.x is still working with
iTunes
11.4 but it is a bit curious based on what I've also read. Your iPod is
acting more as I would expect but the inconsistency of the two devices
is
baffling.

Good luck managing the inconsistency and I'll keep my fingers crossed
that
your iPhone and iTunes keep on working.

Alan,

Everything I've googled does support the idea that ITunes 12.x is
required,
that's why the fact that my phone will sync is such a mystery. Not that
i'm
complaining, of course!
I can connect my phone, it pops up in my sources list, and I can add
music
to it, which is all i use itunes for.
Yeah, if I do call, the people at apple will probably hear the words
windows
xp and start laughing. Well no, but everyone else says xp is outdated,
not
secure, bla bla bla. It works just fine here, I have no issues, I'll
update
when I'm good and ready.
Hopefully I can get this resolved, it's kind of annoying to have an
ipod
and
not be able to play music on it. I mean sure I could copy my library to
dropbox and use that app to play music, but that kind of defeats the
purpose, IMO.

Cheryl,

I wish I had an answer for you but I was under the impression that
those running iOS 9.x had to run iTunes 12.x to get correct iTunes
behavior with their iDevices for things like syncing and backing up.
Since you were getting your iTunes 11.4 to sync okay before this
problem arose, I guess something about my information was incorrect. I
too have a desktop system running Windows XP but I'm transitioning to
another desktop system running Windows 7 which is the one on which I
run iTunes. I ran iTunes 11.4 on my Windows 7 system until day before
yesterday when I upgraded it to version
12.4 since I was finally ready to upgrade to iOS 9.x and believed
iTunes 12.x was required to get correct functionality between iTunes
and a device running iOS 9.x.

As Richard suggested, maybe Apple Accessibility will be able to help
but I suspect they're going to start that upgrade your iTunes rallying
cry when they learn you're running iTunes 11.4.

I hope you're able to resolve your issue.

Not to sound like a broken record, but have you called Apple

The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can
be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues.

Hi, everyone.
First, before I get into what's going on, let me say that i'm using
an ipod touch fifth gen, and that my computer is running windows xp
and Itunes 11.4.
Yes, I know, my OS is ancient, please don't tell me that.
Now, on to the mystery.
About a month ago, I downloaded an AudioBoom update, didn't like it,
and tried to go back to the previous version.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the right version on my computer, so I
restored my ipod from an icloud backup in order to get my previous
app back.
The restore worked, eventually. The first few times it kept saying it
couldn't copy some of my apps because they weren't available, but I
was eventually able to complete a restore.
I import all of my music from cds, using itunes to sync it to my
ipod.
Because of the restore, my music wasn't coppied over.
So I tried to sync my ipod to get my music back, only to be told that
my ipod couldn't be used because it required a newer version of
itunes.
Now, for the mystery. My iphone 5, which is running the exact same
version of IOS as my ipod (when this started it was 9.3.1, and still
happens with 9.3.2), will sync just fine.
i've tried everything I can think of to get this working, with no
success. I even downloaded the IPSW file for IOS9.3.1, put my ipod
into recovery mode and restored with that, no luck.
Now, there is a newer version of itunes that'll work on xp, but I
don't like itunes 12, and because my phone will still sync fine, see
no real reason to update.
Has anyone had this kind of thing happen to them? If so, what can I
do to get my music back onto my ipod? I've even tried various wifi
file sharing apps, but they all just keep the files inside
themselves, since apple won't allow us to copy music to the ipod's
internal library without itunes.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, this is super frustrating.
