I’m trying to find the article I recently read that demonstrates how vast
the gap is between Apple profits and all of the Android handset makers. I
believe Apple makes 33 percent on each iPhone, while the best Android handset
maker makes about 15 percent. Most make under 8 percent, and that’s because
they compete against each other and not just Apple.
As for market share, no, it has nothing to do with a true comparison to
Apple because of the way sales are calculated. I never buy into the market
share numbers. The reality is that Apple counts only product sold to the
consumer as sales. So, when they say they sold X million iPhones, that’s the
number sold directly to consumers.
Like Microsoft, Android handset makers use the principle of counting
product shipped to stores as sales. So, 1 million items could be sold to a
store chain, but even though 750000 are sitting on shelves, it’s still a
million products sold in their books. Also, whenever you hear those offers AT&T
and Verizon have where you buy one Android phone, you can get another free,
guess what? Those are counted as sales too. I’d love to see actual numbers in
which product actually sold to consumers are used.
As for Android, I’ve pointed this out a number of times. Instead of wasting
time explaining the fractured state of the Android echostyem and the 8 or so
active versions of Android that no one even knows happens to be the latest
version, the simple statistic of the reality that 92 percent of Apple devices
are running iOS 10.X, while only 0.2 percent of Android devices are running the
latest version of Android. That says it all about the state of Android.
Lastly, again, I will try to find the article, but in reality, unlike the
previous claim, the marketing data actually illustrates that people are jumping
ship from Android to iPhones. In fact, the iPhone 6S still out sold Samsung’s
flagship phone last year, and this was after the release of the iPhone 7. Once
more, the number of folks going to iPhone isn’t even by a small number either.
If I have the time, I’ll post the links, but an internet search can probably
locate them.
