Hello Sieghard and Everyone, You know, from my perspective, regardless of how I respond to this thread, some will think I am a power-hungry dictator and some will think I am misguided, and some wil think, …What disappoints me the most is that apparently no one thinks that I am a regular guy, volunteering each and every day, to help spread information through our community in an effort to bring and keep us all on the path of accessibility enlightenment.
I am a member of other lists of which I am not the moderator. On those lists, when I have posted articles that the owners declared were not list-appropriate, it never crossed my mind to withdraw my membership just because I didn’t like there posting policy as it pertained to my particular post. However, since a response from me appears to be necessary, here it is: 1. I will not apologize for acting in what I believe to be the best interest of the group. 2. It was not I who suggested that Jonathan or anyone else leave the list. Cara and I do not make list policies in order to keep or attract members but, rather, to accommodate the reasonable exchange of information. Sometimes people like these policies and sometimes they do not but always remember that they are put in place not to restrict information but to help keep it flowing in a meaningful direction. 3. Apparently, I did an extremely poor job of attempting to make it clear that the same posting policies that apply to Nearby Explorer, Seeing Eye GPS, Blind Square, Alexta, Twitter, etc, apply equally to AIRA, nothing more or less. Perhaps I jumped the proverbial gun in my reply to Jonathan’s post; you know creating a storm in a teacup but, even so, some of the vicious responses to that post have truly surprised me. I have always considered this community as being part of my extended family so, perhaps you can appreciate my surprise when I discover that there are those who are willing to immediately disregard all of the good times, easy-list-exchanges and my own personal contribution to this community just because they disagree with one post, perhaps a porely written and unnecessary post, but one post, nevertheless. Apparently, no one thinks that it would have been nice if Jonathan, who clearly disagreed with my reply, had contacted me, off-list, in order to discuss this matter so that I could have better explained or, possibly, retracted my earlier comment. Apparently, the responsibility was mine, and mine alone. So be it. 4. I have absolutely no doubt but that if I had insisted that this thread be closed before everyone had a chance to contribute, it would have only served to prove to those who are already convinced of my evil-doings that I am truly an out-of-control power-hungry dictator. Still, if I let the thread continue, then I clearly don’t care. I trust that you can appreciate my dilemma. Finally, I hope this post makes it clear that I do care about the list and everyone who chooses to be a part of it. By the very fact that this thread has been allowed to continue should demonstrate that it is not our goal to stifle the words of those concerned about any list issues. I will kindly ask that this thread be closed because I hope I have settled the question of how the AIRA product is to be treated, on-list. What really surprises me is that Mark posted what he did and never provided any further explanation or responded to any of the dozens of posts. He also didn't close the topic, but he posted two articles which would indicate that it's not a matter of him not having caught up with the list. I for one would appreciate a post from him regardless whether it's one where he maintains his position or one where he clarifies whether he has changed his opinion regarding this based on what was said.
