Dear Robin & List: If the phone has a home button, press home & power for seven seconds, this reboots the phone.
If no home button, press volume down button & power for seven seconds, this reboots the phone. I find Iphones often give a brief shake when rebooting. This confirms they are rebooting. Warning! Holding down home or volume down & POWER MORE THAN 7 seconds can place the phone in recovery mode where you need to connect it to iTunes to recover the phone. Brian K.
