Normally when my IPhone starts up, voiceover begins and says whether the screen curtain is on or off. Occasionally it will say "portrait mode" and occasionally it will say nothing at all, so I wait a short time and then swipe on the screen to see if it reacts. I agree that it would be great to have a slight vibration like the Android, but since it does not, try the swiping to see if it is on.

Samsung or older Nokia phones for those that recall those. Not a
perfect solution, but is what we have now.
