I'm getting tired of this thread too. Nothing can replace my guide dog unless
I were to get my vision back and that ain't happenin until I'm in Heaven
because my eyes are prosthetic. Just sayin.

I used to have a black t-shirt that said in big yellow writing, “Keep Staring,
I might do a trick!” I loved it hahaha.

I just don’t care if people stare at me or not. If they wanna make me that
important and take the time to stare at me that’s fine. Stay safe

well, to each his own. I’d rather use tech than that awful cane, and let’s
face it everyone cares what people think of them. I grew up in a sighted world.
the fewer things I can use that are blind-specific the happier I am, and we
have no idea what these devices would look like. in a perfect world no one
should care what things look like, but we all have concerns about how we look
to other people. I’d hope I was surrounded by people who don’t care, and could
be free of any judgment, but that’s not the case. if you’re at a place where
nothing truly bothers you I envy that, but I also don’t like the attitude I’ve
seen here that it’s a stupid waste of time. Advancements that we can use are
never a waste of time.

I agree that a cane does not help if somebody has no sense of direction, but to
be embarrassed by it to make is not an issue and I think nobody should be
embarrassed about whatever it is they need to be independent. This would be
like somebody in a wheelchair being embarrassed that they have to use a
wheelchair or somebody with a hearing aid being embarrassed they need one of
those. How about people who lost a limb and have a prosthetic arm or leg,
should they be embarrassed?
The fact is that we all are who we are and if you are embarrassed by the cane
then where does that stop? Would you be embarrassed if you had to wear thick
glasses and how about that future super backpack, people will still know that
you are blind and the smart, high-tech content of said backpack will require
all sorts of sensors and cameras to function which maybe more or less
noticeable by others. And in any case, what do I care what others think? Maybe
I care to a degree when it comes to people close to me, but if I were walking
down the street and a bunch of idiots were openly pointing at me and laughing
their heads off because of my cane then I would maybe pity them, but I sure
wouldn't feel embarrassed by it.
