Neil. we have discovered my upload speed is dreadfully slow so it is probably causing a timeout during backup.
I need to find out if my wife’s phone is backing up when she gets home later. I’m backing up 35.3 megs and it’s saying it takes an hour. I don’t think dial-up was that slow. I doubt your backup is large enough to be near that, but it can be. My iPad backup is 4.2Gb and my iPHone fluctuates between 1.3Gb and 11.9Gb, depending on how many photos I've taken without dumping to my Mac. Noting that this is for everything you use for iCloud, contacts, e-mail etc, it could be that your iPhone backup is larger than the space available, and as such, there is not enough room… which the error message may just be misleading you over… check the size of data on your phone, photos etc. and compare.
