You can tunr on the shake to announce address feature to get immediate
info about your current address. However you'll get an address even if
you're not i on any named road.

The only objection i've got against blindsquare is that it takes too long to
report on what street i actually am compared to the Trekker Breeze. It may be
that the comparison is unfair, but i have the feeling that i could go down a
street for several blocks and then all of a sudden Blindsquare will tell me
where i am, and by that time, if i'm lost, i may already have figured out that
i'm lost and so have maybe turned around, with Trekker, i feel the response is
more instantaneous assuming the damn thing gets a satelite fix, which could
take a couple forevers.

But BlindSquare provides excellent monitoring (including crossed
streets) in addition to POI discovery and allows you to save your own
POIs and monitor them. It even has its own speech so can work in the
background and while your device is locked. It's the best publically
available app that I've encountered thus far in terms of feeling like
you are holding a Breeze or a BrailleNote GPS system. The best part is
that you can use it in tandem with Navigon or Apple Maps for turn by
turn directions (and, in the latter case, map exploration) while still
hearing Blindsquare's speech to announce your proximity to the POI
along with crossed streets and other info.

link in the message I just sent to read about it. BlindSquare gives a more
blind-friendly interface, but I use Localscope all the time now. It brings
up the most POI I have seen from any app.
