Apple uses similar branding to refer to other products, such as the
iPod Classic and iPod Video, which don't have internet access. I don't
know off hand what the letter 'I' signifies in terms of branding but
it wouldn't refer to "internet." Keeping in mind that apps like
Navigon can already work without an internet connection, this doesn't
really have anything to do with it. It's an app developer's choice as
to whether or not maps are going to be stored locally, and I imagine
part of it is simply convenience and economical use of storage. For
example, Blindsquare can work almost anywhere in the world with no
need to download several gigabytes of maps first for offline storage.
There's a huge convenience there. But of course, that convenience
comes with a price which is that you can't use the app in question
without internet access.
