Pardon my ignorance.
Where do you go to purchase the unlocked iPhone?
Then, do you take it to, say, the AT&T store to have it activated with the
carrier?
I am currently using AT&T, but not under contract now.

Hi Ricardo,
The advantage is that you don't have to stick with a main carrier. Here in
Canada Telus which is one of the big 3 carriers (Telus, Bell and Rogers)
also owns another provider called Koodo which is an MVNO using the exact
same network. However, I am paying $56 for unlimited nation wide calling,
unlimited texting, call display, voice mail and 2 Gb of data. The exact same
thing from Telus would cost me $85, which is $29 more a month. Over 2 years
this means I am paying $696 more, add to that the $399 for a 64 Gb iPhone
and I would pay $1,095 for a phone which I can buy for $880 (it's $30 more
in Canadian as in the States if you buy the phone outright and unlocked). On
top of that I am on a month-to-month plan with Koodo and 10% of my monthly
bill goes on a tab which at some point later I can apply against a new
phone. I have been with Koodo for almost 2 years and as I only got on this
promotion a bit into my initial contract which was about $10 more, I already
have about $150 I can use against buying a phone and I get another $150 from
Koodo against staying with them (if I left before this amount was paid back
I'd have to pay it back, but at this point I see no reason why I should
leave). If they come up ith a better promotion again this year before
Christmas I can just call them up and they will put me on it. I am sure
there must be MVNO's like that in the States where it does pay to bring your
own phone.

Sieghard

Hi,
Unless you plan on switching networks in a 2 year span, how do you save
money? I'm just assuming the majority of people in the U.S. with an iPhone
are on the 4 big carriers. So, lets say I buy my phone off contract, I
don't get a discount on my bill for using my phone on any of these networks
so, where is the advantage?

Not sure if I will get it, if I do it certainly will not be right away
since I just got the 5 a few months ago. But, for me, the only way to go is
to get an unlocked phone. Phones that are tied to a carrier are far too
restrictive, you pay a bit more for a phone that is unlocked but it's well
worth it. If you add up the cost of your monthly bill with a 2 year
contract, it's actually higher.

Hi all. Just curious about what different people will do when it
comes time to purchasing the iPhone 5s. Oh, and before I go on, just
a point to note, the s in the name 5s is lower-case because if it's a
capital S it looks too much like the number 5 visually, so Apple made
it a small s on purpose. So, the correct way of writing it is iPhone
5s. Anyway, since you cannot pre-order the 5s, will you go to your
local phone carrier store, or to the Apple store? I'm just curious as
to whether people will go this Friday and wait long lines like Black
Friday in the US, or if they will wait a few days until the lines get
less.
I'm pretty excited myself because this will be my first time getting
a new phone the day it comes out. In the past I've gotten it when it
was an afterthought, or in the case of the 4s, when it had been out
for about 4 months already. usually I wait in case there are initial
problems found with the first batch of hardware, but this time around
I'm diving in with my eyes closed as the saying goes.
Although all members are welcome to respond, I'm hoping that only
people who are getting the 5s will respond to this thread since I'm
not asking about whether it's a good idea, or if the 4s is better, or
if we should stay with what we have. This is because there are other
viphone threads which have already covered this.
Cheers.
