I'm planning on purchasing the unlocked device only, but I'm not sure
if I should go to an Apple store or order it online. I would really
like to get it this weekend, as I'm busy with work and travel after
that and I have some time to set it up now. Part of me really hates
the idea of actually standing in a line to buy a cell phone when it
first comes out.

Does anyone know how long it generally takes for Apple to ship the
first batch of phones if you order online? I've heard that if you
order online at 3:00 a.m. EST on Friday, you can't select an option to
pick up in-store later that day. so if you want an unlocked phone
during the weekend, it looks like your choices are:

1) Order online when it comes out and hope it ships quickly.
2) Stand in-line.
3) Hope your phone is still available when you get off work Friday or Saturday.

When I ordered my 4S online, it took about two weeks to ship from China.
