Does not seem to work that way for me, I have to focus on the app to close
it regardless and finding them is sometimes a problem, plus the home app
won't close but shows up so it can be confusing if one is doing this late at
night or early in the morning when not functioning on all four cylinders.

I'm not sure what you mean by having to swipe through apps to close them.
Once you do a three finger swipe up to close an app, the next app gets
focus, so you just need to do another three finger swipe up to remove that
app. Once you start doing the three finger swipe up, or the double tap after
changing the action item to remove, you don't need to swipe to the next app
in the App Switcher. This is the same as how the App Switcher worked in IOS
6.
