We have the VIP 1,000 from TalkingThermostats.com and have had it for 5 or 6
years. They have newer models but the instructions it comes with make it
easy to install. My wife who is sighted installed ours with no problems.
The furnace wires are all color coded and you pretty much match the red wire
on the talking thermostat with the red wire coming out of the hole in the
wall etc. Once a year around the first of January I swap out the 4 double
A. batteries with new ones, put the VIP 1000 back on the wall and it's done
for another ear.

There is also the one made by NEST, which can be controlled through the
iPhone. NEST also makes a smoke and CO detector called Protect.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to be dependent on a thermostat that's tied to
the
iPhone only.
I use the Talking Thermostat from VIP Solutions. They are
programmable--everything talks. (504) 733-5888.
They have a couple different models, one is for two-stage HVAC systems and
another is for heat pumps.
