Dear listers I really do think this is a software issue and nothing to do with the sensor or the roughness, smoothness or oddness of ones finger or thumb pads. The reasons why I think this are because firstly Apple wouldn’t, in my opinion, settle for a technology that only works for people with ‘average’ or ‘normal’ fingerpads – they hold customer satisfaction and press sentiment in too high regard to risk a major popular backlash. My second reason is that it works fine for a day or so then stops working. Reset it and the same again. That says software to me and not hardware. Of course I could just be wishful thinking.
As an update I programmed my thumb into three slots a few days ago as you know and, fingers crossed, it seems to be holding out. This could of course be premature and it could stop working tomorrow but this approach of recording the same digit multiple times may just be helping. Any other helpful or alternative suggestions welcomed. By the way it wasn’t my intention to start a thread on Apple’s approach to releasing immature technologies – we could talk about maps or Siri etc, but I’d rather we focused on solutions.
