I chose not to place my last smart phone in a case, and I didn't have my
iPhone in a case for it's first two years. I've recently put a bumper
around it, which is very minimalistic, and I did it as much to give it
some grippability as I did to protect it. I also got the bumper as a
gift, and I'm not sure if I would have gotten it for myself.
In the twelve or so years I've carried a smart phone, I've only dropped
them a few times, and only once did I cause any cosmetic damage to the
phone. I'm pretty good at keeping them in pockets or compartments by
themselves or only with objects that aren't going to damage them, like
ear buds. I don't keep them in the same pocket with my keys, coins or
pocket knife for example.
Smart phones are made to be pretty durable, and obviously, they're meant
to be pretty thin and sleek. I just knew I took relatively good care of
my phones, and I realized I was placing this very elegant device in a
pretty cheap plastic or leather case. I just made the conscious decision
that I paid a lot for this phone, and I wanted to enjoy it and not a $20
case.
I'm not criticizing anyone who chooses to use a case for their phone. My
wife is a very different person, and she views her phone as a tool, like
a pen. She doesn't want to have to worry about it, and she wants to be
able to just toss it into her purse or any pocket that's handy. For this
reason, she has a Otter Box case for it.

Hello, everyone.
The reasons for putting an iPhone in a protectivecase are very good
ones, and I don't want to devalue them. However, the iPhone without a
case is certainly a more compact an sleek unit. I'd be interested to
hear from anyone who has chosen not to use a case. What protective
measures do you take with your phone? For instance, do you put in a
pocket or purse compartment that no other item occupies? Do you try
to avoid using it in crowded areas where the chances of its being
dropped are increased?
Thank you.
