That is correct Chris. I like to think of the method of holding the POWER and HOME BUTTONS for ten seconds as analogous to unplugging a desktop computer or using some other means to force it to turn off when all normal shut down methods don't work. It is a last resort to unfreeze a device that won't reboot normally. In any case, I guess I could drop Apple Accessibility a line or try resetting my settings. I'll just have to decide whether my problem is really that big of a deal. I do like being able to slow down my speech rate from time to time to review something in detail. Thank you Christopher and Richard for the suggestions thus far.
