Yes, our laser was black-and-white and slow also. Not quite as noisy as the Daisy-wheel, however, and that was slow, especially the day I typed and printed 60 pages with no ribbon, it was there but did not seat right, good thing it was all on my computer but it took about five hours to get them all printed with the ribbon in the right place.
I have not decided what I am doing for my limited needs, firs thing is to see if my nephew can look at it second will be to probably buy another, there are plenty of them out there I see. I had that thing for about 12 years. Of course it printed only 4 pages per minute which at the time was blazing fast and now is a joke with $200 printers doing 20 or 25 pages per minute, but you can’t of course compare printers from 20 years ago with today’s printers. I have rarely had issues with reliability with all the HP printers I have ever bought except for that one cheapo I mentioned. Of course anything below $250 or $300 is a throw-away if it doesn’t work after the warranty period because it is simply not worth spending a bunch of money to send it in and then get a $150 bill for repair or more likely get a message back that it can’t be repaired. I find it very interesting how a lot of large corporations HP included advertise how “green” they are, but especially all the cheap printers nowadays are throw-away products which contribute hugely to what goes into our landfills. I bought one in 1987 to use for a doctor’s office account I had been doing on a Daisywheel . It was huge, expensive and I think I may still have a drum for it somewhere in a closet. From what I read, they also take up a very small footprint. Whatever you do, I would recommend getting a LaserJet over an inkjet, as they are much less wasteful in regards to toner versus ink use. Also, laserjets print faster, and some of them can even do dual-sided printing.
