From a Finder window, have you checked Finder > Preferences > General? Not 
having Catalina yet either I’m not 100% sure of my ground here, but I’m 
assuming things haven’t changed THAT much, but there should be a checkbox 
allowing you to show a number of items on the desktop. You’ll see Hard disks at 
the top of the list.

Things have been extremely quiet on the Catalina from ever since it was 
released. I don’t know whether this is because nobody is downloading it or 
everyone who has is happy with it. I do know that Adam Engst from Tidbits was 
forced to move to Catalina after a recent SSD failure. Like the rest of us he 
was waiting for the “right” time, but since upgrading he seems to have no 
complaints.

Still thinking about it, but my Mojave frying pan is working so well I don’t 
want to go jumping into any fires...
