I test manually and automate when I am done with the manual testing.
Reason for this it takes a lot longer to write auotmated tests then
one would think. With two week delivery cycles, product comes first.
Having said that, 95% of my tests are automated and works well. I have
run the gamut of dev, qa and cm. Currently in QA. I do see a
distinction between development and automation qa. Development build
products. QA breaks products. Automation QA does need a development
mindset though to automate. If you are a set theory fanatic one can
say that QA-Automaters are a superset of Developers. You need those
development skills and in addition have the skillset that it takes to
know how to break software.
