There is *already* a pretty-solid gem that handles protobufers
it is also listed in the protobuf project page in code.google.
( the only thing I don't like about it is that it compiles
   ruby classes with trailing spaces )

Other than that it just simply works!

Check it out you may find it useful. I saw your implementation but I  
think
its still young and *needs-tests*!!
If you feel like you really want to rewrite it go ahead!

And yes I agree. You should definitely make that its own package/gem.
