Notepad - no, shouldn't be a problem, which perplexes me. I'd say
that's probably coincidental with other programs.

DW - likely a problem.

Browsers - also likely, but not nearly as much demand on your system as
DW.

If it helps to not have so many programs open at once, then 192MB of
memory might not be enough. I recently upgraded an XP user from 256MB
to 512MB, and they noticed a considerable difference in using DW and
Photoshop. I use 768MB of DDR memory with an Athlon 2000+ processor,
and I have absolutely no problems.

XP is an excellent operating system (either Home or Pro), although it
*is* sensitive to video card drivers - that seems to be the most common
problem reported to MS - I heard that right from the horse's mouth. Is
this a desktop or a laptop? If it's a desktop, I might suggest a new
video card that has new XP drivers. I upgraded to a Matrox G450 (for my
dual displays) when I upgraded to XP because I found that this was the
only one that supported multiple monitors and was also on the MS
hardware compatibility list:

http://www.microsoft.com/hwdq/hcl/

If you have too many programs opening at startup, then use the feature
that MS brought back after dumping it in W2K - msconfig. Go to Start |
Run, and type in msconfig, then click OK. Go to the Startup tab, and
uncheck as many programs as you feel you can do without - especially
RealTray!!! If you find that you needed one after all, you can always
go back in and re-check it.

Rather than MSN, you're better off searching with Google, which will
likely provide some results from the MS Knowledge Base.

Lastly, make sure that you've downloaded and installed all the Windows
Updates - there are often updated hardware drivers for XP that might
help.

I hope this all helps.

Scott,
At first I thought it was only with one program, but it's happening with
notepad, macromedia dreamweaver, my browsers, etc.

I have 192MB, shouldn't that be enough?

Sometimes the programs mentioned above work fine and close without a
problem, but sometimes I can't get any program to close. I'm assuming
it's a win xp problem. Dreamweaver is the newest version, so it can't
be because it's old. I have searched the msn website trying to see if
they have troubleshooting info about it, and so far haven't found
anything.

It gets frustrating if it happens 2-3 times daily. I've been good and
not having so many programs opened at one time. Just one open at a
time.

Well, thanks for your reply, I'll keep on searching for an answer
through msn help.

Jan

Subject: [wdvltalk] RE: Programs won't close

Hi list,
Has anyone else experienced this problem? When I am through working in
a program and I try to close it, it won't close. I do get a dialog box
stating the program won't close, but then that won't close either.
Another dialog menu comes up about sending a report to Microsoft, but
still the program(s) won't close. The only way I can get them to close
is to reboot my computer,

Does anyone know if this is a Windows XP program, and if so, how to make
it work?

Jan
