Jan, Check your video card and see if there is a driver update available. Most of the time when I've had "freezing" problems that occur randomly and don't seem to relate to any specific program it is a problem with the video card drivers.
By all means get the additional ram. It certainly can't hurt. I always have Outlook 2002 open and it isn't uncommon to find Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks, IE (multiple windows), Opera, NN 4, NN 6.2 & Mozilla all open at the same time any maybe a game of spider solitaire some where in the background.
