Yes, Scott, clearly loading 98 on a contemporary hardware platform will work
and more memory is fine; keeping in mind the 512 and 1gig+ problems. Lots of
documentation for swap file management (google on "win98 memory"). The
freezing is seen as a result of 512 or 1gig+; or issues with windows
resources. The windows resources issue does not appear to be hackable. When
you're out of heaps and stacks, your widgets are done. Although mostly such
problems seem to be with opening new windows. Some hints at problems with
closing windows.

I would still maintain that you could load Win98 on a new, FAT32 system
with plenty of CPU and bus speed, and the additional memory would help
considerably. You can always manage the swap file yourself.. I would
bet that this memory issue is directly related to the hardware
configuration of the system.

Any documentation on this, Andy?

Scott, it's not a limit. Win98 works most efficiently with 196 or less.
Additional memory provides a decreasing rate of return. It won't hurt to
go to 512; it just won't help as much as you think. As I recall it has
to do with the manner in which win98 manages memory. After 196 it gets
"muscle
bound": big, maybe impressive but not terribly usable.

I've never heard of this 196mb limit other than on this forum. I've
just searched web for information on this, and I conclude that it is
probably a myth. Someone please prove me wrong.

It would not be the OS that limits physical memory, only the virtual
memory if you set it manually. Physical memory and cache constraints
would more likely be related to the motherboard or CPU.

Jan,

The 196 limit is for Windows 98. I'm running a gig on my primary desktop
and 386 on my laptop. I wouldn't run XP with less than 256 if I had a
choice. (My partner's laptop unfortunately won't go up to that without
removing and replacing all existing ram so he's waiting for the next
upgrade cycle- soon).

Someone on this list told me to not go over 196MB because he said there
wouldn't be much difference after that. The maximum I can have with
this computer is 256MB, and have been seriously thinking about
installing more memory up to that amount. If it helps, all the better.
