Andy ::

Your are correct in saying it is not a limit, but there once was a published M$ EOM
Reseller
Program "Tech-Doc" that stated ... more than 196Mb of Memory would not achieve an
increase level
of performance due to the limitations of the Win95 platform; and furthermore that in
Win98 release
1 - that more than 196Mb could cause decreased performance on that platform with most
Appz.

Now, Win98SE was supposed to fix this issue (decrease of performance); the company
that I worked
for as a Network Architect/Engineer issued a memo detailing the 196Mb Memory
Limitations in win
95/98 OS machines. The document was printed directly off the M$ OEM Reseller Program
web site. I
am still a M$ OEM Authorized Reseller, but I have been unable to locate that Tech-Doc
on their OEM
site. The document additionally stated that, systems needing more than 196-256 Mb of
memory should
be on the NT platform. A lot of companies used (and still do) use a "HOME-USER"
designed platform
(win9x/ME/XP Home Edition) as the OS for employees ... again this platform was (and
still is)
designed for the casual home user in mind, not to be used for business level
workstations.

I personally cannot understand why (except for price) why anyone in a
business/programer/design
environment would use a "HOME" version OS ... [I know I will probably get a ton of
disagreement,
but side-by-side the NT platform out performs the home versions in every way possible
... hands
down) ... I still have clients that use win9x/ME/XP Home; they have all kinds of
issues from FAT32
errors, corrupted system files, applications conflicts, bad or inccorect drivers that
occur out of
thin air - on the other hand ... my clients on the NT platform are usually (there are
always M$
problems) problem free with NO or little down-time experianced running some really
aggressive
appz; like AVID, MAYA, 3DMAX, LIGHTWAVE, AUTO-CAD, VisualBasic Enterprises, and
JAVA/C/C++
compliers. So, personally I believe that indiviuals using their PC's for business uses
shouldn't
use anything else ...

Well, I have said my piece ... but, OS vs. Hardware relationships are a mystery
themselves. PC
repair is not a science, nor will it ever be. You take your car in to the mechanic
because it
doesn't run right. Well, if he is good, he is still only guessing at what the problem
is. If he is
good, then you have a better chance he will get it right the first time, but that is
still no
guarantee; the same with PC's. You can build 100 with all identical hardware and OS's,
installed
in the same manner, same time and they will all react differently from each other ....
