There is a saying, and I'm sure I'm not expressing it exactly,
that if someone copies you or your content, it should be taken
as "flattery", but I don't feel flattered.

You might feel a little flattered if these people acknowledged you as the copyright holder. In some of my written work, I have stated that it may be freely copied and distributed, provided that I am acknowledged as the author. This doesn't always work, either.

Again, there is absolutely no way to keep web site content from
being stolen unless one doesn't put it on the web, and that's
it!

How true. I am arrogant enough to believe that I can continue producing original ideas faster than people can steal them, which makes me feel a little better about it.

I do not have the time to follow up (or even search for) breaches of my copyright, although someone did present me a printed copy of an article some years ago which was a copy of something I had written previously. An exact copy, mind you, including references to two assignment I had done that no-one else could possibly have claimed to have done.

I remember some years ago interviewing three people, each of whom claimed to have been the project manager on a website that had just been launched and that was reckoned to be the next big thing here in New Zealand. Since the collapse of the whole shebang, I have not seen anyone claiming to be the project manager of it. (I have never interviewed the guys who really were the project managers on it.)

As a total OT aside, the one advantage of the recent US extension is that we shan't have snatches of the music of George Gershwin used on cheap TV ads, in the same way as that of Mozart and Vivaldi.

Regards,
David
