13. Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, section Copyright Registration (http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#cr)

I read some news this week about a whole site dedicated to theft of copyrighted material. The U.S. Department of Justice seized the site, but I don't know what more is being done or can be done. I also thought that material you dated and added the © symbol to was protected without filing any papers.
