Hi,

Let me insert a few facts on copyrights here:

and this is something that you should all know if you are running your own
development business.

We provide all of our clients with a Limited Release of Copyrights at the
completion of our work. At the begining we explain the clients rights to the
website design site and its symbiotic programming. We also reiterate this
information at the completion so there is no crossed paths as to
communication.
FOR ISP's and HOSTS

Synopsis:
***************************************
"When copyrighting a web site, special precaution must be taken to assure
that all aspects of the web site are properly protected. Failure to properly
register a component of the web site can lead to a loss of the benefits of
copyright registration, including statutory damage and attorney fee awards
that are made available as a result of a valid registration.
In order to register valid copyright, you must either be the author if the
work as defined under the copyright laws, or you must have received an
assignment from the author. All of the individual listed above can often
claim that they are authors or joint authors of portions of the work. Where
this is the case, assignments and acknowledgments must be obtained in
advance to assure that you have complete unrestricted rights to the work."
*****************************************

There are many instances of copyright protection in force as we speak the
best known is the DMCA which mandates the HOST of a copyright infringed
site must take that site done (block it) upon notification or be fined $5000
a day.

You can also post an alleged copyright site to www.pirated-sites.com

In summation a website is copyrighted at the time of inception. To be
awarded damages you MUST register it for $30 prior to filing suit. This is
US applicable only :)

Also as Google is just a data reporting website it cannot be sued for
displaying the data that is returned from a web search. Just as you can not
sue somebody for using your meta tags, as that again is just data.

Oh what a tangled web we weave... ;)

Joseph,

In the US there is copyright immediately upon creation. Registration is not
required but does help 'prove' that you created the material and when it was
created. So if you do have to go to court having registered (which I believe
is $35) makes proving your case much easier.

US Copyright law was changed several years ago (1989) to be more or less the
same as most of the western world. For more info see
